Adolf Eichmann

Adolf Eichmann Adolf Eichmann
Left: As a young SS officer - Right: following his capture

SS Obersturmbannführer - Lieutenant Colonel in the SS, Adolf Eichmann was the Office Manager for Jewish Affairs (Section IV B4) of the Reichssicherheitshauptamt - Reich Security Headquarters. In 1957 he uttered a horrific remark to the Dutch Nazi journalist Willem Sassen. At the time, Eichmann was hiding in Argentina. The remark was tape-recorded, transcribed, and intended for eventual publication. On the tape Eichmann boasted, stressing that he was not just the recipient of orders, he was more of an idealist. He expressed his delight to the Dutch journalist over the systematic regularity with which death trains were scheduled and subsequently left Westerbork in the Netherlands for Auschwitz/Birkenau and Sobibor. It indeed is spine-chilling reading. He remarked: "dass man sagen kann, es war eine Pracht, - it could be said, it was ostentatious." On 31 May 1962, following his trial in Jerusalem, Adolf Eichmann was convicted, sentenced, and subsequently hanged for his crimes against humanity. His body was cremated and the ashes thrown into the Mediterranean.
